China’s statement at the 37th Session of UNIDO PBC Agenda Item 15:UNIDO’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic

First of all, China fully acknowledges UNIDO’s effective response to the coronavirus pandemic. In the wake of the outbreak, the Secretariate lost no time in producing the framework Responding to the crisis: building a better future, which scored positive development in assisting developing countries in strengthening response to the pandemic and achieving industrial recovery through strong measures that included production capacity building for medical goods and policy proposals for economic recovery.

China proposes that all parties take full advantage of the UNIDO platform and bring into full play its advantage in technical cooperation in order to help developing countries enhance capability of responding to the crisis through measures of capacity building for medical goods production. At the same time, assistance should be provided to the developing countries in effectively dealing with the opportunities and challenges brought about by the new industrial revolution and digitalization, letting them enjoy the positive benefits of inclusive and sustainable industrialization in achieving green and sustainable economic recovery and promoting attainment of SDGs.

Since the outbreak of the pandemic, China, alongside all parties, including UNIDO, has actively participated in the cooperation in combatting the pandemic and provided help within our ability to vulnerable countries and regions in front of the pandemic. Up to now, China has provided anti-pandemic assistance to more than 150 countries and 13 international organizations and sent 36 medical expert groups to the countries in need. China was among the first countries that proposed and practiced the COVID-19 vaccine as a global public good. We have provided vaccines free of charge to more than 80 developing countries and exported vaccines to 43 countries. So far, China has provided more than 300 million vaccines to the world, promoting with concrete actions the building a community of common health for the mankind.

Looking ahead, China will continue to help developing countries respond to the coronavirus crisis through the platform of UNIDO, the south-south cooperation and strengthening the cooperation in important areas such as “the Belt and Road Initiative”, achieve ISID and make contributions to the elimination of poverty in developing countries and realization of economic growth.
